Selection Criteria

As shown in Figure 11, to be part of the Barnes QI program,[1] patients had to meet specific selection criteria:

  • Admission to hospital twice in a single year with an acute COPD exacerbation;
  • A COPD GOLD stage 2, 3, or 4];[2]
  • BODE (Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea and Exercise capacity) index score ≥5;[6]
  • Blood gas analysis that met one of 3 criteria: partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) ≤60 mmHg; partial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2) ≥52 mmHg; or FEV1 <40%.
