Diabetes Mellitus in the United States, 2014

Figure 2 shows some of the demographic statistics from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for patients with T2DM in the United States in 2013:[1]

  • Approximately 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes (almost 1 in 12 persons).
  • Of the 26 million, 19 million people are diagnosed with diabetes, another 7 million people are living with undiagnosed diabetes,
  • An additional 80 million people have prediabetes.
  • Almost 2 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged >20 years in 2010.
  • The prevalence of diagnosed diabetes increased by 128% from 1988 to 2008.
  • The current cost of diabetes in United States is $245 billion per year;

If these trends continue, almost 1 in 3 Americans will have diabetes by 2050. Harms D. J Nurse Pract. 2014; 00:00 – 00.
