Current and new therapeutic targets will be reviewed, as well as the most recent clinical data with new therapeutic approaches and the issue of viral resistance to antiviral drugs. As antiviral therapy has become increasingly effective it is important to understand how improving clinical response has or should affect the therapeutic indications for chronic hepatitis. Target AudienceHepatologists, Gastroenterologists, ID specialists, Laboratory Professionals (directors and medical technologists) working in the areas of Viral Hepatitis in hospital institutions, reference laboratories, and public health departments. Learning ObjectivesAfter completing this activity, the participant should be able to: 1. Describe the role of viral replication in disease progression of HBV or HCV. 2. Identify patients with active viral replication who are candidates for antiviral therapy. 3. Explain the most recent data on HCV drugs in clinical development. 4. Recognize the emergence of antiviral resistance in treatment of chronic viral hepatitis.
