Retrospective Review of a QI Initiative of Hospital Re-admission

The Ventilator Management division of Barnes Healthcare Services performed a retrospective review of data from the Barnes Healthcare Quality Initiative (QI) program conducted between 2010 and 2014.[1]  The overall program included a subset of patients with COPD, and the QI program was designed specifically to determine the impact of a multifaceted intervention on the rates of rehospitalization in these patients. In a separate analysis, Dr Sairam Parthasarathy (University of Arizona) and his group[2] looked at four facets of the program:

  1. Medication reconciliation by a pharmacist;
  2. Oxygen therapy;
  3. NIV using a Trilogy 100 [Philips Respironics] device set in an AVAPS-AE (averaged volume assured pressure support with auto-expiratory positive airway pressure) mode;
  4. Patient education.
