Results

The results of the study by Dr Parthasarathy’s group[1] are shown in Figure 13.  A total of 397 patients who were eligible for the QI program received the intervention. Three patients who were eligible declined to participate.  Before the QI program, 365 patients were on 24-hour oxygen, 27 used oxygen at night, and the remaining 3 patients were not on oxygen therapy at all.  The QI program instituting NIV, patient education, and medication reconciliation led to a reduction in the proportion of patients who required ≥2 hospital readmissions, from 100% in the year before the intervention to 2.2% in the year following initiation of the program, a highly statistically significant difference (P<.0001).
