Barnes study COPD patients encompass those at the highest risk based upon a standard risk classification rubric

This Figure illustrates the standard risk classification rubric.[2]  The red highlight in the upper panel underscores that the patients included in this study, in addition to being in GOLD Stage 3–4 disease, also had to have had at least 2 hospital admissions in the prior calendar year; ie, most of these patients would be GOLD stage 3–4, category C or D patients.
