Figure 8 provides an overview of the budget impact model that we developed to evaluate what will be the economic impact of increased adoption of home-based NIPPV with AVAPS-AE for the eligible, severe COPD patient population.  The model was constructed so that the only input required from the user is input of the number of patients who qualify for home-based NIV.  Using values from published literature as well as from the Barnes study,^[1] the calculator compares readmission rates, mortality rates, treatment costs, and reimbursement for patients who receive no NIV, or a BiPAP S/T [bilevel positive airway pressure spontaneous/timed] device, or NIPPV with AVAPS AE.

The model then provides a number of calculations, including annual cost, cumulative savings, and the return on that investment for each stakeholder, looking at the number of surviving patients and ultimately the number of annual readmissions.
