Day-Night Pattern of Myocardial Infarction

FIG. 49:  These are data are from all patients who presented to Saint Marys Hospital, Rochester, with an MI; Dr Sert-Kuniyoshi in our lab limited her study to those patients who reported chest pain, indicating the onset of the MI.[36]  The chest pain was important because it helped identify, with some accuracy, the time of onset of the MI.   

Dr Sert-Kuniyoshi and her colleagues conducted sleep studies in all the patients with a MI and found that in patients without OSA (shown in the Figure in green) there was a fairly low likelihood of developing a heart attack during sleep from to 22:00 (10:00 pm) to 6:00 am.  In patients without OSA the likelihood of MI increased in the early morning hours after waking, but in patients with OSA (shown in yellow) the increased likelihood of an MI occurred during the sleep hours (between 10.00 PM  and 6.00 AM), with a lesser likelihood of a MI in the early morning.
