Hypoxemia and Prognosis after MI

FIG. 50:  The data in the previous Figure showed that for patients with sleep apnea, a heart attack is more likely to occur during the nighttime hours.  The other finding from the same group was that about 60% of the patients with an MI had previously undiagnosed OSA. 

So the question is, Does the OSA, diagnosed or not, in a patient who has had an MI and survived, have an impact on the future outcome of that patient? 

Shown in this Figure are the data from a follow-up of about 4 years in the 44% of patients who had sleep disordered breathing (SDB).[37]  As seen in the Figure, for patients in the highest tertile of oxygen desaturation, with oxygen saturation ≤84% during sleep, the likelihood of a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) increased significantly compared to patients apnea in the middle tertile of oxygen desaturation or those who had minimal, if any, nighttime desaturation.
