FIG. 26:  This Figure shows data from the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study, which looked at the likelihood of developing incident or new-onset hypertension in patients with OSA.[12]  As shown in the graph, apnea severity increases with increases in the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) of 0 and AHI of 1–5, 5–15, and >15, which is moderate-to-severe apnea.  As the apnea severity increased, the likelihood of developing new onset hypertension increased by up to 3-fold, and importantly this was independent of the usual risk factors for hypertension like age, sex, smoking, BMI, neck girth, etc.
