Option 2: Use of ASV with Automatic EPAP
FIG. 19: The most recently introduced ASV devices all have an automatic EPAP, where the clinician can set the EPAP range. The EPAP ranges vary slightly between the different devices and manufacturers, but these EPAP ranges are usually sufficient to treat all patients with an indication for ASV.[4] Importantly, the three types of devices shown in the Figure can also be run with a fixed EPAP that can be set manually, as described in the previous Figure. The automatic EPAP of all three devices responds to apnea, flow limitation, and snoring. In addition the Philips Respironics and Weinmann devices respond to hypopnea with an increase in EPAP pressure.
