FIG. 18: From the data described in the previous Figure, we can conclude that heart failure patients with OSA generally do not complain of daytime sleepiness and are less sleepy than the general population for the same AHI, so these patients lack the usual indication for CPAP therapy. Treatment of patients with moderate-to-severe OSA but without a complaint of excessive daytime sleepiness, and with an ESS ≤10, does not reduce cardiovascular event rates. Therefore in a randomized clinical trial, heart failure patients with OSA but without daytime sleepiness, and with an ESS ≤10 could be randomized to a control group due to equipoise.
