FIG. 38: The prevalence of TE-CSA may be 5–15% in patients with OSA who are initially titrated on PAP therapy.[23,27,31] The natural course of these events is largely transitory, where the majority of cases resolve after 4–12 weeks of CPAP.[27-32] This suggests that the actual percentage of persistent TE-CSA is about 1.5%. There have also been reports of TE-CSA occurring later in the treatment course, and this may occur in about 7% of patients who are being chronically treated with PAP therapy.[32] Some patients report subjective sleepiness that tends to resolve with this treatment.
We do not know whether there are specific clinical symptoms related to TE-CSA, and as with opioid-induced CSA, we do not have enough data to understand the long-term consequences of TE-CSA.
