FIG. 14: Patients with COPD see a flight of stairs as Mt. Everest. They are afraid of climbing them, and because of this they often rush to the top as quickly as they can. They report that they feel like they are going to die at the top and they vow to never do it again. But with education about proper pacing techniques, patients with COPD can walk up several flights of stairs on the first day, as long as they take long enough. Once they switch from being the hare to being a tortoise and pacing themselves to do more, that adds to the feeling of self-efficacy in these patients and undoubtedly improves the QOL.
