FIG. 27: The results of the study,[21] shown in this Figure, were striking. COPD hospitalizations or emergency department (ED) visits over the course of the study were 48.4 per 100 patient-years in the disease management group versus 82.2 per 100 patient-years in the usual care group, a ratio of 0.59 in the combined endpoint that was highly statistically significant (P<0.001). Hospitalizations trended toward significance, but ED visits were also significant. All-cause hospitalizations or ED visits were also significantly reduced in the disease management group, with a rate ratio of 0.73 (P<0.003).
So the disease management intervention appeared to be highly successful, and clinicians who routinely include self management as one of the components of pulmonary rehabilitation were very encouraged by these data.
