FIG. 35:  So it appears that pulmonary rehabilitation following exacerbations is beneficial. However a recent randomized controlled trial by Greening et al[26] (which appeared after the analysis in the previous Figures by Puhan et al[25]) initiated pulmonary rehabilitation during hospitalizations for exacerbations.  Followed out to 1 year, the intervention had no effect on healthcare utilization.  However, in reviewing this type of intervention, it appeared to be somewhat less intensive than the traditional pulmonary rehabilitation programs, and so, again, we need more information.  We need to know how intense and what type of self-management education the pulmonary rehabilitation should be, and more work is needed to determine the best way to impact healthcare utilization and mortality with pulmonary rehabilitation.
