FIG. 46:  This quip comes from an interesting editorial, referring to the concept that it takes “3 months to train a muscle, but 6 months to train the brain.”[36]  In other words, physical activity is more than physiology; sociologic, psychologic, and environmental factors are also involved.  To have optimal effect on physical activity, a pulmonary rehabilitation intervention must be extended out past the traditional short period of time.  In the United States, the intervention it is often limited to 6, 8, or 12 weeks.  In Europe it is a little longer, but even longer is probably needed to realize the beneficial effects on physical activity.  This means focusing on incorporating collaborative self management and fostering self-efficacy in our patients.
