Variants are clinically tricky

FIG. 15:  This Figure illustrates data from a 2013 study carried out at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio,[10] that looked at the sensitivity of pre-cystectomy biopsy or TURB to detect bladder cancer variants in subsequent cystectomy. Histologic variants were very frequent in this data set from 302 patients.  Mixed or pure variant histology was reported in 53% of the patients, but only 6% of these cases were identified on pre-cystectomy biopsy or TURB, so sensitivity was poor.
