Does the BCG strain matter?

FIG. 46:  Other BCG strains have been investigated in bladder cancer studies.  An attenuated, live culture preparation of Mycobacterium bovis (BCG Tice) and BCG RIVM, a Dutch preparation, were compared vs mitomycin in patients with pTa and pT1 bladder tumors.[38]  Although there was little difference between the other 2 strains, BCG Tice was the least effective, with more recurrences.  A Swiss study that compared BCG Tice with BCG Connaught showed that BCG Tice was significantly less effective with respect to recurrence rate.[39]
