Shariat - Figure 10

Meta-analysis of 2410 Patients from 7 EORTC Phase 3 Studies (1979 – 1989)

FIG. 10:  This Figure presents data from a meta-analysis by Brausi and colleagues[11] of 2410 patients from 7 European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Phase 3  studies carried out in the 1980s. The results showed that recurrence at first follow-up cystoscopy is often found at the primary site of resection.  Patients with single tumors had between 3% and 21% recurrence at the primary site, if the cancer had not been treated with adjuvant intravesical therapy.

If adjuvant intravesical therapy had been given, the rate of recurrence decreased, but nevertheless a significant number of patients still experienced disease recurrence due to inadequate primary resection.

In patients with multiple tumors – which often occur in T1 high-grade bladder cancer, despite adjuvant intravesical therapy – the recurrence rate was between 7% and 46% at the primary resection site.  This clearly underlined the necessity for delivering a high-quality TUR, and highlights the important impact the individual surgeon has in determining further progression and recurrence of the disease.
