Why Are We Talking About Ketogenic Therapy?

It's more than a diet – it's a medical intervention. Ketogenic therapy can be a treatment for refractory seizures in both kids and adults. This has been known for over a century, initially through actually starving kids with refractory epilepsy, which obviously can’t be done long term. Instead, researchers figured out that if you fed kids a very low or almost no carbohydrate diet, which is a ketogenic diet, they would still see similar improvements in the seizures. And now this has been supported by decades of randomized controlled trials and evidence-based guidelines suggesting and stating that ketogenic interventions can help, especially with refractory seizures, helping reduce the incidence of seizures between 50 and 90%.
