Type 2 Diabetes in Children

Figure 9 reports the presence of diabetes in children, meaning boys or girls <20 years of age, in the United States.  The total prevalence is about 1 in 400 children, mostly with the genetically inherited T1DM.  Given the risk factors for T2DM (principally overweight and obesity), an incidence of 3600 new cases of this disease annually in this population is worrying. More worrying is that given the current “epidemic” of obesity in the United States, many more children are likely to be diagnosed with T2DM in the future.[2]  Harms D.
