FIG. 13:  One of the main cost inputs in the follow-up of the patients in the second SEER-Medicaid study described in the previous Figure[15] was endoscopic surveillance.  Figure 13 reports urology practice intensity by quartiles, showing that for endoscopic surveillance, for example, the provider intensity ranged between means of 7.3 and 8.3 endoscopic procedures per patient.  This represents a significant burden to patients as well as a significant cost to providers, and if it offers no actual benefit to their patients’ care, then we have to question the purpose of it.
